How to Convert MPH & RPM When Cycling

Advertisements

The relationship between miles per hour (MPH) and revolutions per minute (RPM) is very useful for learning how to pace when cycling. Many stationary bicycles and outdoor bicycles have techniques that provide indicators. However, you may find it necessary and useful to manually switch between the mph and RPM readings. By determining the bike's unique conversion factor, you can use a one-step algorithm to move between miles per hour and revolutions per minute. Step 1

measure the radius of the wheel receiving power from the pedal. The radius is measured from the center of the wheel to the outside edge. Step 2

multiply the wheel radius by 6.28 to calculate the wheel circumference. This is the distance a bicycle travels in a circle.

Step 3

divide 1056 by the circumference of the wheel. Quotient is the conversion factor for the direct movement of a bicycle between mph and rpm. Step 4

Convert mph to RPM by multiplying any mph reading by the conversion factor. On the contrary, MPH is the quotient of the revolution divided by the conversion factor
